چکیده

Long time uptake arsenic will cause cancers and blackfoot disease. There are still several million people suffering from drinking arsenic ontaminated water. This work studied the performance of coupled chitosan/UF for arsenic removal and the influence of dissolved organic matter n arsenic removal with UF operation. Humic acid representing dissolved organic matter was fractionated into five groups of molecular sizes by gel ltration chromatography. Arsenic rejection by UF under the experimental condition is only 10%. In the presence of humic compounds, the arsenic emoval of 22% is obtained. DOM with apparent molecular weight > 35,000 Da is the principle component responsible for chelating arsenic and hereafter being rejected by UF membrane. The combined interactions of humic compounds, chitosan, and arsenic enable a 65% arsenic rejection y UF. The results presented here enable our understanding of the complicated mechanisms involved in chitosan/UF/DOM/arsenic system. 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Removal of Natural Organic Matter Using Uvc/tio2 Photocatalysis Process Coupled with Coagulation Treatment

The use of standalone titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalytic treatment and one that is combined with coagulation process to treat natural organic matter (NOM) from two different water sources (synthetic water containing 10 ppm of humic acid and water samples sourced from Myponga reservoir) is investigated herein. In the combined process, the water samples were treated with a novel composite coa...

Removal of arsenic from groundwater by electro-ultrafiltration

The objective of this study was to examine the removal of arsenic from groundwater by a laboratory scale electro-ultrafiltration (EUF) system. Two groundwater samples taken from I-Ian County located in the northeastern part of Taiwan were studied. These well waters were selected based on their As(III) and As(V) contents; the As(III) to As(V) ratios of the well water were 1.8 and 0.4 for Well-#1...

Tracing organic matter composition and distribution and its role on arsenic release in shallow Cambodian groundwaters

Biogeochemical processes that utilize dissolved organic carbon are widely thought to be responsible for the liberation of arsenic from sediments to shallow groundwater in south and southeast Asia. The accumulation of this known carcinogen to hazardously high concentrations has occurred in the primary source of drinking water in large parts of densely populated countries in this region. Both sur...

Chemical Addition prior to Membrane Processes for Natural Organic Matter (NOM) Removal

Membrane processes for surface water treatment include microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF), depending on the target material to be removed and the limiting process economics. MF will remove turbidity, but no dissolved compounds, unless associated with colloids, UF will, depending on the molecular weight cut off (MWCO), partially remove NOM, and NF will remove NOM ...

Removal of Arsenic (V) from Aqueous Solutions Using Chitosan–Red Scoria and Chitosan–Pumice Blends

In different regions across the globe, elevated arsenic contents in the groundwater constitute a major health problem. In this work, a biopolymer chitosan has been blended with volcanic rocks (red scoria and pumice) for arsenic (V) removal. The effect of three blending ratios of chitosan and volcanic rocks (1:2, 1:5 and 1:10) on arsenic removal has been studied. The optimal blending ratio was 1...
